  1. Theriogenology
    1. study of animal reproduction
    2. genitals = reproductive organs
    3. combining form is “ genito “
    4. also called gonads….combining form is “ gonado “
  2. Male reproductive terms
    1. scrotum = encloses testicles
    2. testicles or testis = glands that produce sperm

a.       combining form is “ orchio “, “orchido”, “testiculo”, “testo”

    1. epididymis = tube at upper part of testicle that stores sperm

a.       combining form is “ epididymo “….ex: epididymitis

    1. prostate gland = surrounds urethra and secretes fluid that aids in sperm motility.
  1. Female Reproductive terms
    1. ovaries = female gonads

a.       combining form is “ovario”,  “oophor”

    1. uterus = organ that serves as incubator for the fetus

a.       combining form is “utero”, “hyster”, “metro”  (ex: metritis)

    1. estrus cycles

a.       monestrus = has one heat cycle per year

b.      polyestrus = has more than one cycle per year

c.       seasonally polyestrus = multiple heat cycles at specific times of the year.

d.      Induced ovulators = female ovulates (releases egg) only upon copulation.

    3. parturition = giving birth
    4. meconium = first stool of newborn
    5. colostrums = thick milk which contains antibodies and nutrients…..only present for a few hours.

    1. cryptorchid = one or both testicles fail to descend into the scrotum.
    2. dystocia = difficult birth
    3. epididymitis = inflammation of the epididymis
    4. hermaphrodite = having  both ovarian and testicular tissue
    5. mastitis = inflammation of the mammary glands
    6. orchitis = inflammation of the testes
    7. paraphimosis = penis cannot be retracted back into the prepuce
    8. phimosis = narrowing of prepuce prevents extraction of penis
    9. prostatitis = inflammation of the prostate gland
    10. pseudocyesis = false pregnancy
    11. pyometra = pus in the uterus
    12. uterine prolapse = protrusion of the uterus through the vaginal opening
    13. Cesarean (C-section) = delivering of offspring through a surgical incision
    14. hysterectomy = surgical removal of the uterus
    15. ovariohysterectomy = surgical removal of the ovaries and uterus
    16. mastectomy = surgical removal of the mammary gland
    17. neuter = to alter the sex of an animal…..usually a term for males
    18. intact = animal has reproductive capabilities
    19. oopherectomy or ovariectomy = surgical removal of the ovaries
    20. orchidectomy = surgical removal of the testes
    21. vasectomy = surgical removal of a portion of the vas deferens (to sterilize)
    22. libido = sexual desire
